about

I am so, so excited to be writing you that the rescore that I told you about is finally finished!

I wanted to tell you a little bit about the video game and why it's sound track is so nostalgic for me.

Abuse is a 1996 side-scrolling platformer shooter video game developed by Crack dot Com and published by Origin Systems. The game was released for MS-DOS, and later ported to other platforms, including Windows, Linux, and Mac OS.

In Abuse, the player controls a character who is trying to escape from a research facility overrun by aliens. The game features fast-paced action, with the player using a variety of weapons to fight off hordes of enemies. The game's controls were unique at the time, allowing the player to move, aim, and shoot in any direction.

Abuse was notable for its use of dynamic lighting and shadowing effects, which added to the game's eerie atmosphere. Honestly, the level at which the game created "vibes" was on par with Doom and other games that came after it. The game also featured a level editor, allowing players to create and share their own custom levels, which was very fun!

Abuse received positive reviews upon release, with critics praising its gameplay, graphics, and sound effects. The game has since become a cult classic, with many fans citing it as a favorite from the era of classic PC gaming!

For myself, the game brings back a lot of fond memories of playing it with my brother. We played the game a few years after it's release, probably in 1998? I'm not sure if my memory serves me correctly as I was quite young. Anyways, we spent hours on the game, mostly me watching him play as I was a little too young to be any good (it was quite fast-paced). So, with this, I'd like to dedicate this album to my brother Joachim. As a way of thanking him for always introducing me to cool things and encouraging me in my musical pursuits!

The game's soundtrack was originally composed by Paul Baker and Joe Basquez, so credit to the original composition goes to them. The game is now, however, in the Public Domain. What I did was take those original MIDI notes and rescore them. I changed instruments using much more modern sampled instruments, edited the balance of how these instruments worked together, and reworked some notation here and there to make it fit better with the new mix.

Paul Baker is a composer and sound designer who has worked on many games over the years, including Duke Nukem 3D and Blood. Joe Basquez is a musician and sound designer who has worked on numerous films, TV shows, and video games.

The soundtrack for Abuse features a mix of heavy metal and electronic music, with a focus on fast-paced percussion and aggressive guitar riffs. In my version, I've also added more orchestral elements on some of the tracks and blended those with the synths.
